While growing up, I didn’t eat the typical Latino dishes. As Boricua as my family may be our meals did not consist of the popular rice, beans and chuletas. Nor did we indulge in the popular pernil bashes during the holidays. Instead, we ate plenty of chicken, turkey and fish. Additionally, plenty of vegetables and salads.
Needless to say, our food choices were seen as an oddity to most Latinos. But I didn’t mind. I knew that mami had done enough research throughout the years to steer our family in the right direction when it came to our health and eating habits. Looking back now, my family has always sought alternative medicine and treatments. One of my earliest experiences with an acupuncturist was in Puerto Rico when my mom went to get treated for allergies. Furthermore, I grew up seeing a chiropractor, which I still do to this day, and listening to my mom as she spoke of enemas and cleanses. So for me, looking at this alternative, healthy lifestyle came much easier than it would for most Latinos.
